BMW M3

The M3 uses a 6 cylinder inline engine since 1993(?). Some argue that the first (4 cylinder) model is the better sports car. The car gained a lot of weight (and power) during the years. But more weight on its own just means that the car is less throwable in the corners.
| generation | engine | power | transmission |
| first | 4 cylinder 2.0 L | 190 | 5 speed |
| second [1990 - 1996] | 6 cylinder in-line | 286 | 5 speed |
| third [1997 - 1999] | 6 cylinder in-line 3.2 L | 321 | 5 speed or optional 6 speed sequential |
| latest [2000 -] | 6 cylinder in-line 3.4 L | 340 | 6 speed sequential |
It always have been a atmospheric engine, this kind delivers the crispiest throttle response. The newest M3 (2000) now uses 6 separate throttle openers.
The new model has a power dome on the bonnet/hood. This serves no real function but looks quite nice. Another striking difference is the appearance of newly styled mirrors. The BMW M5 [1999] was the first M-model to use these kind of styling. These mirrors allow electrical fold in / out.
